A Dayton Walk to End Alzheimer’s® team captain is being honored nationally for her contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Debbie Scheiding, of Beavercreek, has been named a 2018 Nationwide Top 100 Walker by the national Alzheimer’s Association. Last year her team, Families for Alzheimer’s Awareness, raised $22,647. Scheiding said since 2005, when her family started participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, she and her sister LeAnne Brown, of Centerville, have raised close to $130,000 for research and support services for those impacted by Alzheimer’s disease. “This is a small way for us to give back,” Brown said. “It would be a whole lot better if we could raise a white flower and not have to ever fundraise in our life.”
Alzheimer’s is a progressive fatal brain disease that can not be prevented, cured, or slowed. At the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, a white flower represents the first survivor of the disease.
Scheiding said,“our mother was diagnosed in 2004. We started walking then. We wanted to hopefully make a difference if we ever got (the disease). Our mom walked with us until she was unable to do so.”
Last year, more than 4,500 people in the Miami Valley participated in the Walks to End Alzheimer’s, raising over $750,000 for the fight. Kelly Smith, Walk Director for the Miami Valley Chapter, said, “The Miami Valley chapter is honored to have Families for Alzheimer’s Awareness participate in the Dayton Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Deb and Leanne are true champions of the mission. Without the support of our constituents, we could not fund research, care and support!”
