Early-bird registration for the May 9 Dimensions of Dementia Symposium ends on Friday, April 26 and you don’t want to miss out.
This year’s conference is packed with informative sessions and workshops from experts in the fields of aging and dementia. On Thursday, May 9, keynote presenters will be the Rev. Kathy Fogg Berry, who will speak on “When Words Fail: Meeting the Emotional and Spiritual Needs of People with Dementia.” Also, Sam Fazio, PhD, who is Senior Director of Quality Care and Psychosocial Research at the Alzheimer’s Association, will present on “Defining Quality Care: An Overview of the Alzheimer’s Association Dementia Care Practice Recommendations.”
For the past 18 years, Rev. Berry has served as a spiritual care provider in long- term care, hospital and hospice settings. Until retiring last September, she was memory support chaplain at Westminster Canterbury of Richmond, a 960-resident continuing care retirement community. There she provided spiritual support to residents with cognitive impairment, their families, and staff who care for them.
Rev. Berry said that recognizing and addressing the spiritual needs of people experiencing dementia is a necessary part of providing holistic care. She said attendees will receive practical guidelines and tools for providing spiritual care to people living in various stages of dementia.
“Just as people experiencing dementia gradually lose communication and self-care abilities, they lose the ability to initiate spiritual disciplines and/or faith practices which provide comfort, encouragement and purpose. To enhance their quality of life, we need to help.”
There are 6.0 continuing education credits available for social workers, nurses, activity professionals, long-term care administrators, speech, occupational, and physical therapists.
