SPRINGFIELD, OH. – Residents from Clark and Champaign counties will gather at Wittenberg University on Saturday, Sept. 28 to participate in the fight to end Alzheimer’s.
This year’s Springfield/Urbana Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place at Wittenberg’s Benham-Pence Student Center, 200 West Ward St. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The program begins at 10 a.m., with the Walk beginning at 10:15 a.m.
Last year, almost 900 people participated raising more than $100,000 for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Eric VanVlymen, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association Miami Valley Chapter, said, “There are 30,000 individuals in the Miami Valley who are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and we believe there are thousands with symptoms who have never been diagnosed. The funds for the Walk help families seeking information and support.”
Becky Skiles Gorby, an Edward Jones Financial Advisor, said, “I walk in support of the thousands in Ohio and millions across the country who are fighting Alzheimer’s on the frontlines, every day. I walk in support of my clients and their families. I am not willing to stand idly by and watch them lose their loved ones and their hard- earned savings to Alzheimer’s.”
In addition, Ms. Skiles Gorby said, “I walk in support of my family – my aunt, who we recently lost to Alzheimer’s and I walk for my dad, who courageously battled dementia and passed a few short years ago. I walk in the hope to enhance care and support services for people living with the disease and their loved ones, like me. I walk for research to uncover Alzheimer’s treatment breakthroughs and, one day, a cure. ”
While at the Walk, participants can learn about Alzheimer’s disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical studies enrollment and support programs and services from the Alzheimer’s Association Miami Valley Chapter. Walk participants also honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with a poignant tribute known as the Promise Garden ceremony.
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disease that cannot be prevented, cured or slowed. In the Miami Valley, 30,000 individuals live with Alzheimer’s disease and 90,000 family and friends care for them.
