How long have you been working for the Alzheimer’s Association?

I joined the Alzheimer’s Association in late April.

What is your professional background?

The last 4+ years I have been with the American Cancer Society serving in multiple roles: Income Development Representative, Corporate Account Manager, and most recently as Sr. Manager, Relay For Life. Prior to that I had been involved in some sort of sales: from glassware to computers to satellite systems. I have 25 years of experience in the publishing world, always involved with advertising sales, and also serving as publisher of three automotive hobbyist magazines.

Why are you drawn to the Alzheimer’s cause?

I believe what it comes down to is I want to make a difference. If I were to affiliate myself with organizations I have a strong personal connection to, it would probably have to be the American Heart Association or the Diabetes Association. But I chose the ACS originally. Why? As I learned more and more about cancer and its impact on peoples’ lives, I realized I can be a part of making a difference in their lives. I believe the same is true of the Alzheimer’s Association. I’m sure of my belief in our vision and mission and of the necessity to raise the funds to fulfill that mission. When I think about how death from heart disease and certain cancers has declined, how amazing would it be to be part of THE driving force to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease, how to detect it, and maybe someday how to treat it, so we can say, “deaths from Alzheimer’s disease have dropped by XX% since 2017!”  And in the meantime, we’re supporting our patients and caregivers like no one else.

What has been your favorite thing so far about working for the Alzheimer’s Association?

The passion and compassion of every staff member I’ve met, and the volunteers I’ve had the opportunity to engage with.

What are you most looking forward to while working for the Miami Valley Chapter?

It has to be making a difference in people’s lives. A former supervisor always said, “it’s not about the money, but what the money does.” I have always tried to model my work ethic after that statement, and look forward to doing the same here.

If you could give one piece of advice to families affected by Alzheimer’s, what would it be?

Start here: 1.800.272.3900.

Finally – what is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

I love to work in my yard, and I’m continually changing and updating our landscaping. I also know my way around a kitchen and love to cook – and bake – for family and friends.
