Sarah Cameron is the newest staff member to join the Alzheimer’s Association Miami Valley Chapter as the Clinical Services Coordinator. Sarah is passionate about the cause and excited to join the Chapter! Read more about Sarah below:
1) How long have you been working for the Alzheimer’s Association?
I have been working for the Association for a month now (Yay!)
2) What is your background?
My bachelor degree is from the University of Dayton (GO FLYERS!). I majored in Psychology and minored in Social Work. When I graduated from UD, I worked in a couple local nursing homes mainly in admissions and marketing. I quickly found that I am not a “business-minded” person and found my true calling in social work. Therefore, I decided to go back to school. I enrolled in Miami University and Wright State University’s collaborative MASW program and received my Master’s in Social Work. Once I graduated, I then worked in another local rehabilitation center as a social worker.
I volunteered and interned through the years at the Alzheimer’s Association and working for them has always been a dream of mine. A little over a month ago, I was told of a position that was opening at the Association. I decided that I couldn’t pass up the wonderful opportunity to become an employee so I applied … and now here I am and I couldn’t be happier!
3) Why are you drawn to the Alzheimer’s cause?
My grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2006, and my family and I became her caregivers. As soon as I learned of her diagnosis and began my role as a caregiver, I geared all my studies and learning to find out everything I could about this devastating disease. I knew from that point on that I would always be drawn to supporting the Alzheimer’s cause. When my grandma passed away in 2013, it only fueled my passion for working for this cause and a world without Alzheimer’s.
4) What has been your favorite thing so far about working for the Alzheimer’s Association?
How do I pick?? I think I can narrow it down to two favorite things. First of all, I absolutely love working with the families and their loved ones. I have such a high respect for all of them! They are so inspirational. I am glad that I can help empower them and be a part of their journey. My other favorite thing is the staff. Everyone has welcomed me with open arms! It is like a big family here and everyone is so passionate, knowledgeable, and supportive of one another. I just feel so blessed to be here.
5) If you could give one piece of advice to families affected by Alzheimer’s, what would it be?
Get support – whether it is from family, friends, professionals, or the Alzheimer’s Association! Being a caregiver can be tough and is a 24/7 job. It is absolutely essential that you are taking care of yourself too. Please know that you are not alone. There are so many programs and services out there as well as great education. If you are not sure where to start, give us a call. We can help pinpoint those needs and work towards building a support system around you.
6) Finally – what is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?
I love spending time with my husband (I just had my 1 year anniversary in July!), family, and friends. We like to try new restaurants/foods together, play games, and just hang out or relax. I also enjoy reading, cooking, watching sports, and walking/biking.
