Meet Kim Willis – Support Group Attendee

Often times, we hear caregivers and family members affected by Alzheimer’s disease say they are looking for support from people who “really understand because they’ve been there, too.” Kim Willis is one of those people.

Kim’s mother has Alzheimer’s disease and Kim regularly attends the Englewood Support Group on the second Tuesday of every month. Choosing to attend a Support Group can be a nerve wracking – although also very rewarding. How did Kim know it was time for additional support? What can you do to find support near you?

When did you know it was time to go to a support group?

Once my sister moved out of the country I realized the importance of encouragement, the sharing of information and the validation of those who share my experience. In our monthly meetings we often talk through and troubleshoot different issues and ways to resolve problems. What is shared in the meetings is confidential and we all get it.

What is your favorite thing to do with your mom?

I love going to the 2nd Street Market with my mother.  My mother and I always enjoyed shopping together. Our shopping now is very different, but we keep the experience simple and focus less on things and more on being together.  We also love singing and dancing and going to church together.
