Meet the Team Captain – Shanda Ashbrook

Shanda Ashbrook has been participating in the Miami County Walk to End Alzheimer’s since 2010 – when the Walk was known as the Memory Walk. Shanda walks in memory of her grandfather, Henry Grise. She says that she watched how Alzheimer’s disease not only destroyed his life and who he was, but also affected his family and friends. She is determined to do her part to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease – which means she is a devoted Team Captain for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. As the Team Captain of Henry’s Heroes, Shanda has raised more than $2,000 to date! Are you wondering how Shanda has been so successful? Read below!

Why did you start a Walk Team for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s?

I started a team for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in honor of my grandpa, Henry Grise. I saw firsthand the devastation this disease causes – not only to the person who has the disease, but also to the friends and family who care for them.

What is your fundraising goal for your Walk Team this year? How close are you to your goal?

Our team goal is $1,500 and we currently have over $2,300. My personal goal was $500 and I’m almost to $1,500!

What are some ways that you fundraise for your Walk Team?

We mail donation forms, send emails and we have had several fundraisers including a Purse Bingo/Silent Auction, Yankee Candle, Scentsy, Tupperware and Jamberry Nails. We’re also going to be selling flowers this fall and we’re looking into making a cookbook!

What has been your most successful form of fundraising so far?

We had a Purse Bingo event that raised $1,800! We played Purse Bingo, had a Silent Auction, had a 50/50 drawing and sold snacks.

What are you most looking forward to for this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s?

Celebrating our biggest fundraising amount yet!

What is one piece of advice you have for first-time Team Captains?

Don’t get discouraged and don’t give up! Ask everyone for a donation and do as many different types of fundraisers as possible. Some people will say no and some fundraisers won’t do so well, but every dollar helps and you will find out what works best for you and your team!
